Growing up, I remember big family gatherings on holidays like Chinese New Year. He became a doctor and married my mother, a white woman whose family was in the United States long before America became a country. My father came to the United States at the age of six, which is close to my own daughter’s current age. My grandparents and their four children came to California as refugees following the Japanese invasion and then the Communist Party’s takeover of China.
